FRANNY & ZOOEY
A musical tragedy inspired by JD Salinger's oeuvre written in 2008
Premiere, Arenberg Schouwburg Antwerpen December 5th 2008
This play is dedicated to my mother, Tereze Brichart, who,
very much like Seymour of the Glass children, couldn’t bare ordinary life anymore.
“ I really don't remember what happened to all of you. Back in the day, when you were on the radio and little kids and everything, you were all always so - so pretty and happy and - delightfully ordinary. Every hour and every minute and every second of the day. I don't know what the point is of knowing everything and being terribly smart and being terribly handsome and all of that if it doesn't make you happy.”
Franny and Zooey are the youngest children from the infamous Glass family. Their home consists of a suitcase. Tonight they are meeting for the first time since their oldest brother Seymour suicide. In the first scene, we catch a so-called glimpse of Franny's date out with her boyfriend Lane at a local restaurant. We follow Zooey in the second scene into the Glass family bathroom where he oracles about life to his mum on the other side of the shower curtain. Within their parental home and the reminiscence of their retro radio shows as kid stars we live through their inability to cope with their loss and the big questions of human existence."
This show is inspired by JD Salinger's book “Franny and Zooey”. This book, a collection of novels written by the “Cather in the Rye” author was first published in 1961.
