LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR

and the Gothic Romantic fight between Paganism and Christianity” Donizetti

We revisit Sir Walter Scott's masterwork. Not only to embody the curiosity towards the "Nostalgia of the Medieval" but to emphasize this opera and its dramatic and wild landscape 'wandering above lake and fog' of the Scottish Highlands. Throughout the piece, the characters represent the Romantic fight between wild Nature, female Earthiness, magic, and mysticism where emotion (Lucia and Edgardo) rules over ratio (Enrico) and the so-called bondage of science, religion, and greed. All of this finished off with a treatment towards the supernatural and the nationalistic pride that was revived throughout the Romantic period, embodied by a Stonehenge like construction which falls down dramatically during the mad-scene.
