"MATHILDE DI SHABRAN", a Medieval fairy tale adventure in a snow globe” Rossini
A comical masterpiece, infantile yet so clever, this opera truly lets Rossini’s mischief come to life! With a Medieval Castle including a drawbridge and even a hot-air balloon in Act II, “Mathilde di Shabran” truly is a high-tempo whirlwind inside a snow globe! The characters seem to have sprung out of a child’s imagination, and THIS is exactly how it will be staged. Monty Python-esque humor and a world filled with wind-up doll heroes, Playmobil knights, 2-meter-high teddy bears, and an army fighting with coloring crayons!
"JENUFA, a metaphoric abyss besieged by the outside world” JANACEK
Focussing on the mental state of the characters, we descend into a magic realistic nightmare confronting us with the beauty and depth of human emotions. Therefore I created a set that reflects the inner turmoil and the breaking down of the women's emotions and faith within a functioning almost anecdotical outside world. The neon light construction evolves from normal everyday use, towards a claustrophobic mental jail cell to end as a metaphorical nightmare whirlwind inside of the Kostelnicka soul.
"FLAVIO... It is Flavio’s World and you just live in it..." HÄNDEL
This very comical yet little-known opera certainly deserves more attention. In this modern interpretation, I focus on a Baroque aesthetic, with the desire to introduce the audience to pure and bold beauty from both a musical and staging perspective. Picture a King who wakes up every morning in a different delusion—yesterday he was Cleopatra, tomorrow Caligula—and this morning, as the drama unfolds, he believes he is LE ROI SOLEIL... a rainbow of surprises, dances, adventures, love stories, murders, and situational humor ensues...but what does this mean for those around him?
"LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and the Gothic Romantic fight between Paganism & Christianity" DONIZETTI
We revisit Sir Walter Scott's masterwork. Not only to embody the curiosity towards the "Nostalgia of the Medieval" but to emphasize this opera and its dramatic and wild landscape 'wandering above lake and fog' of the Scottish Highlands. Throughout the piece, the characters represent the Romantic fight between wild Nature, female Earthiness, magic, and mysticism where emotion (Lucia and Edgardo) rules over ratio (Enrico) and the so-called bondage of science, religion, and greed. All of this finished off with a treatment towards the supernatural and the nationalistic pride that was revived throughout the Romantic period, embodied by a Stonehenge-like construction that falls down dramatically during the mad scene.
" IL TROVATORE - A post-apocalyptic man-made disaster following the civil war" VERDI
This IL TROVATORE resembles a bit the Black Mirror series, we realize it doesn't always take much to have a completely different reality. This staging takes place in a post-apocalyptic world; the result of the civil war which has set the world on fire. Central themes: the immense solitude of each of the characters, and for the spectator: the confrontation with the idea that our world as we know it no longer exists: a looted and abandoned shopping center is Luna's Head Quarter, while the Gypsies gather around a gutted train.
" THE MAGIC FLUTE, A 1950s Psychiatric Hospital Ward with a Tim Burton twist" MOZART
Eccentric characters navigate this cold, surreal setting, blending dark whimsy with deep emotion. Our protagonist, Tamino, experiences a psychosis, perceiving himself as a pure prince on a “Quest” to rescue Pamina, who comes from the ‘outside world’ to visit her committed mother, the morose Queen of the Night. Tamino's fantastic journey intertwines reality and delusion, exploring themes of mental illness, isolation, and love. The scenography reveals a revolving stage that accentuates the suspenseful, thought-provoking, and sometimes comical perspective on Mozart's masterpiece. The audience reflects on the well-known opera and discovers a whole new layer of emotions, humor and consequences.
